If you have a smart watch, you can listen to music while you exercise. But you need headphones for that. Huawei's latest iteration — just announced and set to debut in stores on March 1 — means you don't have to worry if you forget your headphones.
That's because Huawei Watch Buds, as the new watch is called, has built-in headphones. Yes, in walnut time, right?
The watch has a flip-up display that is not too deep from screen to screen compared to other smart watches. It is magnetically held and the first thing that strikes you when you open it is the thinness of the screen. The second surprise is the content. There are two studs on either side of the center section that holds the battery and electronics.
And the dock has two small earphones. Bullet-shaped, but instead of gunpowder, the tips of the rubber earpieces are very small. Although the larger ear tip doesn't fit particularly wide ear canals, there are three sizes of ear tips that provide a good sound seal.
The idea behind this amazing innovation is that your headphones will never be there and you won't lose them in your pocket after listening to them (many of us haven't bothered to put AirPods in their case. ) because they can be put right back in while charging.
Huawei does not want to jump on the watch or headphones. The watch has a steel case and AMOLED display, and the magnetic cover is designed to look like a pocket watch when opened, adding a touch of nostalgia to the experience. The earbuds are magnetically attached to the bottom of the screen and the charging function is cleverly designed so you can place the earbuds on the watch from any angle and keep charging. Oh, and while regular earbuds are branded left and right and shaped accordingly, the buds here are the same size and reset each time you put them on. That is, even if you put the right headphones in the left jack, when you take them out again, they will immediately change sound channels.
Despite being powered by the watch itself, Huawei promises three days of smartwatch use between charges. The battery saving mode, in which the headphones do not charge or turn off, extends this period to seven days.
The watch has heart rate monitoring, sleep monitoring and blood oxygen saturation detection and more than 80 sports modes.
There are buttons for active noise cancellation and even Huawei's adaptive ear canal technology, where a microphone listens to changes in sound in the ear and adjusts the output accordingly. You can also use them to make phone calls.
I still think it's a bit crazy, but it's definitely innovative and Huawei didn't want to compromise on either device.
The Huawei Watch Buds are available for pre-order today and cost $544 (£449.99). These will be available from March 1.
