The first HomePod It was released in 2018 and was dramatically discontinued three years later without a replacement. (No, the HomePod mini doesn't count.) Fast forward to the beginning of 2023, when Apple finally introduces the HomePod 2. With a new design and internal features, Apple's new second-generation HomePod will arrive in midnight white for the first time.
Finding a new HomePod to buy isn't easy. So this comparison mostly focuses on what Apple has brought to the table with the HomePod 2. As you can see, the changes are huge in terms of design and feature set.
HomePod 2 vs HomePod: What's the difference?
A full review is needed to determine if the HomePod 2 sounds better than the HomePod. It should be in terms of the technological advancement in it. We already know that HomePod 2 packs more features than the original. It includes new voice recognition, temperature and humidity sensors, support for Smarthome Matter level and more.
At the heart of the HomePod 2 is Apple's promised "cruise high" woofer with rich, deep bass. Additionally, it offers a 20mm diameter aperture with a bass microphone equalizer that can dynamically adjust low frequencies in real time.

HomePod 2 has five tweeters that form a pole around the base to hit the high notes. Each tweeter is optimized for high frequencies for clean, detailed sound with incredible clarity. Sound is better with Advanced PC Audio with system sensors, far-field Siri with a quad-microphone design, and spatial audio with Dolby Atmos for music and video.
Like its predecessor, HomePod 2 also has stereo connectivity. You'll need to do this with another HomePod 2, though—you can't pair the HomePod 2 with the original HomePod or HomePod mini in a stereo system.
Other impressive features include advanced PC audio with system monitoring, multi-room audio with AirPlay and advanced volume controls.
New for HomePod 2 are two new sensors, one for sound detection and one for temperature and humidity. The former will not be released until the software update comes later this year. It is designed to detect smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and send notifications. Others control internal conditions.
HomePod 2 vs. HomePod: Should You Upgrade?
It remains to be seen whether current HomePod owners will need to upgrade to the HomePod 2. For one thing, the new model offers new features that include better sound than the older model. On the other hand, if you're using a stereo system, plan on getting at least two new HomePods to do the job, as you won't be able to connect the old and the new.
The new HomePod is cheaper than the first-generation model, which retailed for $350 — a lot of money for a speaker, even if it's an Apple-designed smart speaker. New ones are $50 cheaper, but where does this savings come from?
The bottom line is that the upcoming iMore review will tell us a lot more about the HomePod 2 than we know right now. However, they all work with the best iPhones and other Apple devices.
