Detroit's techno scene in the 1990s was known for its secret sounds in underground warehouses. That's what energetic electronic artist Richie Hawtin, aka Plasticman, is trying to do with his new tour, he announced Thursday.
Just like the old days, day-of-show ticket buyers will get access to secret tourist attractions. The eight-date tour kicks off Friday, March 10 in Detroit, "the birthplace of techno," according to organizers, and continues across North America.
From Our Minds - For Promotions Tour "works with local independent promoters who recognize and respect the sustainability of techno music's history and future through the planning, programming and management of their events."
The tour commemorates the Hawtin CNTRL tours in 2012 and 2015, when Hawtin took a bus to student towns as part of the tour, which included lectures and educational workshops.
"Today, as techno becomes more mainstream and commercial, Khotin wants to re-contextualize and nurture the underground, playing intimate warehouse shows with independent promoters, highlighting a new generation of artists and celebrating the collaborative nature - generations of techno." say the organizers. .
The tour is named after Hotin Plus 8's tagline: "From Our Thoughts to Your Thoughts". He has additional support from Hawtin' technical talent, including Henry Brooks and Detroit's Huey Mnemonic, as well as Barbosa, Jay Yorke, Decoder, Dylan James, Lindsey Herbert, Michelle Sparks, DJ Deep Pedi and G.I.
"Ever since I founded my first label +8 in 1990, it has always been important to me to educate, develop and promote like-minded young artists," Khotin said in a statement. With today's techno-popularity and globalization, it's important to collaborate with the next generation, learn from each other, and act with open curiosity.
Detroit Day Barbosa B2B features Jay Yorke, Decoder, Hughie Mnemonic, Herbert and Hawtin.

Originally from Canada, Hawtin was associated with the second wave of Detroit's techno scene in the 1990s with Jeff Mills, Carl Craig and Mike Banks.
