Vivo X90 Pro Review: Creature Of The Night

Vivo X90 Pro is an interesting Galaxy, Pixel and iPhone alternative of this world with a camera that lights up when the sun goes down. However, poor software choices and lack of polish kept it from joining Android's elite.

In recent years, Vivo has firmly established itself on the cameraphone map, bringing with it new micro-gimbal stabilization technology and a partnership with photography brand Carl Zeiss. The Vivo X80 Pro 2022 is the culmination of its efforts, offering an impressive camera system with fantastic low-light capabilities, along with all the additional high-end features you'd expect from a high-end flagship phone. Is the Vivo X90 Pro a step forward from the company's ambitions? It's time to find out in the Vivo X90 Pro Android Authority review.

About this Vivo X90 Pro review: I tested the Vivo X90 Pro (12GB/256GB) for 10 days. It runs Android 13 (build number PD2242F_EX_A_13.1.11.3.W20) with the January 2023 security patch. This device was provided by Vivo for this test.

  • Vivo X90 Pro (12GB/256GB): TB

The Vivo X90 Pro is one of three phones in the Premium X90 series, which also includes the Standard X90 and Premium X90 Pro Plus. Unfortunately, the X90 Pro Plus, which rivals the best Android phones in terms of features, is limited in China, leaving the X90 Pro as the flagship model in global markets at the time of writing this article.

The Vivo Pro is still a flagship in terms of specifications and features, equipped with the new MediaTek Dimensity 9200 processor with ray tracing, 1-inch 50MP main camera, IP68 rating and fast wireless charging. The X90 Pro Plus ups the ante with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, a long-range zoom camera, a high-resolution ultra-wide camera, and the same awesome in-display fingerprint reader we saw on the X80 Pro . .

This places the Vivo X90 Pro in the awkward position of being the successor to the standard X80 and X70 Pro, while the X90 Pro Plus is more of a sequel to the X80 Pro.

The Vivo X90 Pro will be available in Hong Kong, Europe, India, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand. It comes in a single color called Legendary Black (pictured). No price or release date has been announced in Europe yet, but the device retails for RM 4,999 (~$1,174) in Malaysia. Its predecessor, the Vivo X80 Pro, costs £1,199 in the UK and up to €1,299 in other European countries.

What is good?

Upon unpacking the Vivo X90 Pro, I was greeted with a phone that looks very similar to other Vivo X series phones from the front. However, flipping the device over reveals a new vegan synthetic leather back with a smooth texture that offers a premium look and feel. I also really like the thin metal strip that runs under the camera ring. It blends seamlessly into the frame, separating the top third of the phone from the bottom two thirds.

The camera body is also very large, looking like half an Oreo cookie, or what Vivo calls "big eyes." It's not the biggest camera island we've ever seen, but it stands out even more from the X80 Pro module and even the Google Pixel 7 Pro's huge camera bezel. When the phone is placed flat on a surface, it doesn't wobble much, but I'm afraid the bottom of the case will wear more over time as that's where the phone is normally. However, the leather back and slightly beveled edges give the phone a premium feel. IP68 water resistance doesn't hurt either, as does Schott Xensation Up Glass on the screen and Corning Gorilla Glass on the camera for protection.

The OLED screen of the Vivo X90 Pro is an evolution of the average FHD+ screen.

The display of the Vivo X90 Pro is a 6.78-inch curved OLED display with a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. The good news is that you are having a great viewing experience here. The 2800 x 1280 screen may not be a QHD+ panel, but it outperforms regular FHD+ screens on paper, and I can't fault the sharpness. The display has a maximum brightness of 1300 nits, and I had no issues using the device outdoors. Vivo also offers a variety of screen color profiles, including a Zeiss Natural Color option for more lifelike colors.

Vivo uses the Dimensity 9200 processor in the X90 Pro instead of the ubiquitous Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 we've seen in most 2023 flagships, including Vivo's X90 Pro Plus. This is our first look at the best MediaTek chipsets for 2023, and judging by the specs, they should deliver impressive performance. So what do the benchmarks tell us?

Geekbench results, in particular, show that the Dimension 9200 is very powerful, but falls well short of Snapdragon's best silicon in terms of multi-core processors. However, the X90 Pro performed better in GPU-related tests, outperforming the OnePlus 11 in the Wild Life stress test at its peak, putting it on par with the best Snapdragon processors, which is no mean feat. . It's also close to the top of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, although it doesn't quite match it in terms of sustained performance, more on that later.

Either way, I can't fault the Vivo X90 Pro for day-to-day performance in my tests; Scrolling, multitasking, and launching apps ran smoothly. The game was more of a challenge, but Genshin Impact ran smoothly on medium settings and 60fps. GameCube and PS2 emulation are also good, although I did notice stuttering in more demanding titles like Shadow of the Colossus and F-Zero GX. However, this may have more to do with the health of the Mali Arm's graphics driver than poor performance.

There's no point in having a lot of raw power if the phone dies in a short amount of time. The X90 Pro's 4,870mAh battery generally offers good, if not impressive, performance. Typical use with YouTube videos, some games, and web browsing resulted in over seven hours of screen use and over a day and a half of use (see first image below). More intensive use, including about an hour of GPS navigation, about an hour of camera use, and Reddit browsing, resulted in about five hours of screen use and a full day of use.

The Vivo X90 Pro also features 120W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. The fast-charge toggle is oddly disabled by default, but I still got the time from zero to 100% in 29 minutes without it. The last time the fast charge switch was activated it was reduced by three minutes. In any case, you should expect a charge time of half an hour or less, in line with the OnePlus 11 and other ultra-fast charging phones. It should be noted that the wired and wireless charging solutions are proprietary. The included 120W USB-C to USB-C charger also offers 65W PPS charging, so you can easily charge other devices. The only hurdle might be getting a top-of-the-line Vivo wireless charger, which is essential if you want maximum wireless speeds, although it does support Qi wireless charging as a fallback.

Two other positives are eSIM support and some high-quality stereo speakers. The former feature was long overdue as previous Vivo flagships did not have this connectivity. Meanwhile, the X90 Pro beats my Pixel 7 Pro in speaker volume. The bottom speaker is slightly louder than the built-in speakers, but the sound is still fairly balanced.

What's not so good?

You just need to open the app drawer to see that Vivo has not yet fixed the virus problem in Funtouch OS. We counted 11 pre-installed apps that don't include the "Hot Apps/Hot Games" icon and apps from Vivo (such as Browser and Vivo App Store). In a somewhat annoying step, Vivo actually asks if you want to install additional apps like Snapchat, PicsArt, Pinterest, TurboVPN, and Facebook Lite during the installation process. The Vivo skin definitely has potential with its stock aesthetics and decent feature list. But Vivo really needs to fix its virus woes if Funtouch OS has any chance of toppling Android's best skins.

It also doesn't help that Vivo is lagging behind in the upgrade race. Vivo X90 Pro will support three major OS updates and security patches for three years. The old update policy was good enough, but three years of security updates isn't enough when Google and Samsung offer five years. OnePlus' stable partner BBK also offers four years of security patches for older flagships and five years of security patches starting in 2023.

Funtouch OS is a solid Android skin once again tarnished by a slew of malware.

While overall and gaming performance is generally good, the Vivo X90 Pro reaches unacceptable levels in the stress tests. In this case, the device becomes uncomfortably warm, especially at the edges. Sure, the stress test pushed the phone to the next level, even with intense 3D games, but we were still a little concerned about how the phone would handle more demanding tasks later in life. .

Despite the solid performance, the 3DMark Wild Life stress test revealed that the phone only achieved about 60% of its original performance. It's close to the OnePlus 11's result, but far behind the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which only dropped around 37% despite an overall stability of around 60%, which matches our test of the Galaxy S23 series. We didn't notice any real drops in gaming performance during long gaming sessions, but combined with the overheating we experienced, the X90 Pro might be the first to start flickering during marathon mobile gaming sessions.

It's a bit disappointing that the X90 Pro's display also doesn't support refresh rates below 60Hz. The phone stays at 120Hz, 60Hz, or dynamically switches between the two with a "smart switch". In comparison, the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus drop to 48Hz, while many high-end flagships have LTPO screens that drop to 10Hz or 1Hz. This is normal, but a lower refresh rate can increase battery life in some scenarios.

Speaking of inroads, the in-display fingerprint sensor clearly falls short of the fantastic Sonic Max Vivo X80 Pro 3D scanner here. It's still a fast but sometimes inaccurate experience, but it's a bit disappointing that the new scanner remains exclusive to the higher-end model.

Finally, while I love the design of the Vivo X90 Pro, I could have done without the sticky "Xtreme Imagination" marks on the rear metal strip and the "Professional Photography" marks on the top of the phone. Why waste something good, Vivo?

The triple rear camera system of the Vivo X90 Pro is dominated by the 1-inch 50MP IMX989 main camera. This is the largest camera sensor you can find in a regular smartphone today, and it's the same as in the Xiaomi 13 Pro. What does this mean for actual image quality?

Daytime shots offer plenty of natural bokeh thanks to the large sensor size, but it's a double-edged sword in my opinion. First, you can get good separation between foreground and background. On the other hand, in some cases you have to take a step back, otherwise you risk blurring the subject or blurring parts of the subject.

In fact, even when moving backwards, the camera appears to have a narrow focus range, resulting in washed out colors and general blurriness (check the edges of the flower in the zoomed shot, as well as the shot of the pasta dish ). Then you may have to drag your phone further to get the best shot.

Otherwise, daytime shots from the main camera usually deliver good detail, minimal noise, and relatively strong colors without being overwhelming. Luckily, if you're looking for a more realistic shade, the Zeiss Natural Color profile is also back. However, sometimes cell phones are too sharp.

The huge sensor really comes in handy when shooting in low light, and the combination of that sensor and the Vivo's excellent low-light performance make for great night shots. Expect bright photos with low noise and good detail. Phones sometimes use too much sharpening at night, e.g. B. for daytime shots. Low-light shots can also be a little soft at times. But that speaks volumes about swapping a phone for a cocky Galaxy S23 Ultra at sunset.

The gargantuan 50-megapixel main camera on the Vivo X90 Pro is capable of taking better pictures in low-light conditions.

Perhaps the coolest trick here is the addition of a manual astro mode, which lets you take astro photos just like night mode. All you have to do is hold the phone relatively still for a few seconds and it will take an astro mode photo. While very similar to Astro Tripod mode, Manual mode selects a blue sky color that (thankfully) can be turned off.

It's always best to use a tripod for astrophotography as images are sharper and clearer with a tripod, and image quality can be inconsistent when shooting handheld. For example, in the third image, the mountain has strange characteristics (although this could be due to the lighthouses over the city). However, it's definitely a step up from the standard Night Mode, and means you can be more creative with your shots – there's no need to lug around a heavy tripod or perch on a handheld tripod.

The 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera is a pretty solid daytime camera, although you'll definitely notice very soft corners, purple edges, and a higher-contrast display. During the day, you will also notice a lot of noise in dark areas in some scenes. There is at least one dedicated macro mode available on this camera, allowing you to crop up to 1x for close-up detail without the over-sharpness that plagues the Vivo X80 Pro's mode. 'X80 Pro.

Vivo also opted for a 50MP 2x telephoto lens, which gives it more megapixels than the 2x cameras on the X80 and X80 Pro. Image quality at 2x was good, although detail dropped off quite quickly at 5x and it looked too contrasty. to be loaded. Still, portraits from this camera are mostly sharp with a slight depth error. Vivo has also implemented the Zeiss Cine Flare portrait style for when a cinematic lens flare is desired in the frame, complementing a number of existing portrait styles.

Another new feature is the Zeiss Miniature Effect mode, which is literally a tilt-and-shift mode. Luckily, Vivo lets you adjust the range and angle of the blur, and you can even select the Zeiss bokeh effect to blur and activate night mode.

In terms of video capabilities, the Vivo X90 Pro reaches 8K/24fps but without any kind of stabilization. It goes without saying that the images here make a lot of sense. You should use 4K/60fps or 4K/30fps if you want stable video. I was also happy to see a smooth return of the Ultra stabilization option, although I was disappointed that it was still capped at 1080p/60fps after all this time.

Other notable camera modes include Skyline stabilization (limited to 1080p/30fps but maintains horizon level), Sport mode for motion freezing, Pro mode, Full resolution option for 50MP captures , Supermoon mode, and the manual or tripod mode mentioned above. astronomical mode.

Vivo X90 Pro in the test: conclusion

Vivo X90 Pro is compatible with high-end mobile phones, other views, earphones From. Come on for the same. IP68 class? Konechno. What's your favorite camera? Well.

The X90 Pro has a lot of drivers, no Vivo does it alone, but it's hard to get enough.

In a song there are many alternatives, but there is no full-featured mobile phone.

This is within the year, no Vivo X80 Pro (86999 рупий in Vivo) also has the position, it is in the small and the Vivo banner.
