The Vivo X90 Pro is one such phone with a 1-inch camera sensor. There are not many. This sensor is good on its own, but in this phone it benefits from Vivo's imaging, optics, and ZEISS expertise. The end results...spoiler alert...great. I had to open this intro with the camera in focus, there is no other way. Of course, the Vivo X90 Pro offers a lot more than just a camera setup, though that's the highlight of this phone and we're here to review it to give you a better idea. that you will encounter when you decide to buy.
Vivo X90 Pro is the company's flagship smartphone. The even more powerful Vivo X90 Pro+ has also been launched in China, but unfortunately not worldwide. The good news is that these two phones are very similar. The bad news is that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is exclusive to the Vivo X90 Pro+, which is a periscope telephoto lens. Also, both phones have the same 1-inch camera and the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 that powers this phone is also excellent. So let's get started, we have a long way to go.

Vivo X90 Pro Review: Hardware/Design
The first thing I thought about when I got this phone is that it's a bigger variant of the Vivo X60 Pro+. It is very similar to this phone, which is good. It feels great in the hand, unlike the Vivo X80 Pro, which was much larger (though not by much) and harder to hold. The vegan leather back panel helps with grip, which I think is always preferable when it comes to big phones. The vegan leather also seems a little bigger after using the phone for a while, without a case of course.
Only one color available outside of China
This phone is only available in one color worldwide - Legendary Black. Basically it is a dark gray pattern. The "red" color variant is only available in China, at least for now. Its front and rear are proportionate as they fold into an aluminum frame. Yes, the phone screen is curved and the bezels are pretty minimal. Also on top there is a hole for the display camera. All physical buttons are on the right side, and the device has an in-display fingerprint scanner. More on this soon.
It has a large round camera island on the back.
On the back is a large round camera module that hides three cameras. The main camera uses a 1-inch sensor from Sony, which we will talk about in more detail in the camera section. The ZEISS branding is also visible on the back, just like the Vivo. The company also opted to place a metal strip labeled "Xtreme Imagination" underneath the camera module to separate the top and bottom of the phone. The design looks much better in real life than on the render. This design won't be to everyone's taste, but the phone looks premium, feels good in the hand, and is less slippery than metal and glass devices. Personally, I have no complaints that Vivo makes the phone more compact than it is.
accessories
The Vivo X90 Pro we received had a silicone case. You may have seen some models that come with a vegan leather case that has the same design as the back of the phone. I don't know if it is reserved only for the Vivo X90 Pro+ model in China or if it also comes with the Red Vivo X90 Pro model. Although it was not included in this package, that's all I can say.
Vivo X90 Pro Review: Display
Vivo X90 Pro has a beautiful and large screen at the same time. It has a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with 2800 x 1260 resolution. This panel can display 1 billion colors and has a 120Hz refresh rate (yes, it's an LTPO panel). It supports HDR10+ content and reaches a maximum brightness of 1300 nits. In case you're wondering, it has a 20:9 aspect ratio and it's a curved screen.
The default screen is FullHD +, which is very good
Now the panel itself is beautiful. The image is very clear even in FullHD + mode, which the phone uses by default. To be honest, you won't notice the difference. Colors are vibrant and viewing angles are excellent. However, due to the curves, you may see some fogging on the sides when looking directly at the screen. Unfortunately, at this point the screen is deformed. We also know that Gorilla Glass protects the screen, but we don't know the exact version.
Scrolling is smooth, although the touch screen sample rate could be higher.
This panel is especially suitable for this phone. Scrolling is smooth, animation is great. I sped them up a bit and they worked great before and after this tweak. Touch response is also very good, but I wish Vivo would at least use a 480Hz touch sampling rate instead of 300Hz. The difference is noticeable when you use a higher touch sample rate. If not, then it won't do anything for you. The only thing I wanted was more shine, to be honest. It is excellent and bright enough even in direct sunlight. Yes, and yes, AOD (Always-On Display) mode is also available.
You can easily change this screen to your liking.
Vivo also allows you to change the display to your liking. You can adjust the color temperature manually or choose one of the preset modes. If you prefer brighter colors, no problem. If you like realism… ditto, Vivo has you covered. The default setting is great, so don't worry if you're not ready to make changes.
Vivo X90 Pro Review: Performance
So… specs. On paper, the Vivo X90 Pro is a very powerful phone. It doesn't include a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC like its Plus sibling in China, but comes with a MediaTek Dimensity 9200 SoC. It's MediaTek's most powerful offering right now, and it's very powerful. This was my first phone with such a chip, and to be honest, I won't miss the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in terms of performance. More on this soon.
Here you get LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 flash storage.
Vivo also includes 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UV 4.0 flash storage in this phone (it's the only model available globally). In other words, the company didn't really skimp on RAM or memory. These are the latest modules available. Both of these, along with the aforementioned SoC, keep the phone running smoothly all the time. Whether you're using it for multitasking, multimedia or gaming... it works great.
It can run even the most demanding Android games.
Even if you end up using the most intense Android games, this phone won't break a sweat. It will be warm at times, but not hot, and performance will not suffer. Vivo thought about cooling here and it worked well. In fact, we can't tell the difference between Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and MediaTek Dimensity 9200 in terms of day-to-day performance. The MediaTek chip is inferior to the SoC Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but you will not feel the difference in everyday use. This thing can also run Genshin Impact at the highest settings available, so… here it is.
Vivo X90 Pro Review: Battery
Let's go over the details of the specifications first, okay. Vivo X90 Pro is equipped with a 4870 mAh battery. It supports 120W wired charging, and a 120W charger is included in the box. The device also supports 50W wireless charging, although the wireless charger will need to be purchased separately, of course. It also supports reverse charging via cable if you need to charge your headphones on the go or something like that.
Battery life is very good but could be better
That being said, how is the battery life? Well, that's very good, but not as outstanding as we've seen in other flagship phones recently, as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 seems to handle power consumption well. I was able to get 6 to 7 hours of screen time using it, even typing 7.5 times or two. The first few days I was approaching 5.5-6 hours, because YouTube for some reason leaked. Because I limited background activity, battery life improved and I got 6.5-7 hours of screen time per hour.
Note that I don't play games on my phone, but I edit photos, watch a lot of YouTube, take tons of photos, surf the web, send text messages, send emails... pretty much anything you can imagine. It should also be noted that I spend most of my day on Wi-Fi, as do most of you. Of course, your mileage may vary. Different usage habits, different apps, different signals, etc. all affect battery life.
Even if you have run out of battery beforehand, here you can charge it very quickly
Even if your battery has already run out, don't worry. The 120W Vivo FlashCharge can charge from 0 to 50% in just 8 minutes. A full charge takes less than half an hour. 50W charging is slower but also very fast when you select this option. Of course, this is much faster than the 15-watt charging offered by Samsung and Apple, not even close.
Vivo X90 Pro Review: Camera
Spoiler… Vivo X90 Pro is a smartphone with an exceptional camera. I really enjoyed spending time with him and took some great photos, some of which I will share below. There's actually a lot to talk about here, but let's start with the technical details. Unlike the China-exclusive Vivo X90 Pro+, this unfortunately lacks a periscope camera. However, it has the same main camera and 1-inch Sony camera sensor. It's a Sony IMX989 sensor if you're tracking. It is the largest camera sensor designed for smartphones to date and has a lot of potential. It needs the right software to shine, and Vivo has certainly delivered on that.
ZEISS and great camera software support a really great camera sensor.
The main Vivo camera has a resolution of 50.3 MP, an aperture of nf / 1.8 and a pixel size of 1.6 microns. It supports OIS, the same goes for Dual Pixel PDAF. Laser autofocus also provides faster focusing. There is also a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. This device has an nf/2.0 aperture and a 108 degree field of view. This camera also supports autofocus. There is also a fairly powerful 50-megapixel telephoto lens on the back. It has an Nf/1.6 aperture, 0.7µm pixel size, OIS support, and 2x optical zoom.
As for the pictures taken with the main camera, they are excellent. They are bright, full of detail and well balanced. The phone handles glare very well even in the harshest HDR environments. Considering the size of the sensor, you also get a creamy bokeh effect that reminds me of DSLRs. I have never seen such depth of field in any other cell phone camera, it really brings the photo to life. Photographing my pets with this sensor was a pleasure even in low light. Some of these examples are shown below.
You can choose between standard Vivo and ZEISS shooting modes.
Note that there are two shooting modes available here. You can take photos using standard Vivo settings or ZEISS mode. I preferred ZEISS because the colors weren't too saturated and the images were closer to the real thing, but still bright and lifelike. The Vivo mode was useful at times, but I used the ZEISS over 90% of the time once I figured out what shots it was taking. As such, most of the samples below are made with the ZEISS setting, I will also include some comparisons below so you can see the difference. I used ZEISS in both normal and low light because the images looked really good.
You don't need to use special night mode, no need
In low light, you don't need to use the separate night mode available here. You can do this if you want to make your images even brighter, but normal mode does the trick. This phone can take photos in low light instantly or in seconds depending on the settings. The fact is that in this regard it is very fast and the results are very good. It balances the look very well. It shows a lot of shadow detail, but not a level of overexposure. Thanks to the ZEISS T* coating, reflections are also kept to a minimum. This is Vivo's flagship case for many years and I'm glad it's here. Vivo and ZEISS have been collaborating for a long time and it shows.
It is a pity that there is no periscope camera.
I'd rather see a periscope telephoto lens built into this phone than Vivo's telephoto lens, but... that's what it is. You can zoom to a certain level and still retain good detail (depending on the scene), but don't expect crazy zoom levels. On the other hand, macro photography is very good. You can see some examples below. Even with more difficult indoor lighting at night, he managed to get the job done. The ring photo below shows this best.
Video recording is good too.
Video recording is also very good. It's not the best because you can see the jelly effect when panning in low light and there are other issues, but overall video recording is good. This phone shines when it comes to silence, but it shines at a level that's hard to put into words. The Vivo X90 Pro is my favorite camera phone thanks to the 1-inch camera sensor that delivers great results. It takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it... it's a pleasure to use.
No ZEISS samples compared to ZEISS samples:

Vivo X90 Pro Review: Software
Android 13 is preinstalled on the Vivo X90 Pro, along with the company's Funtouch 13 UI. Funtouch is different from regular Android, but it has a lot of standard stuff. This is similar to your actual Android experience and is much better than the version released a few years ago. However, I didn't notice any major issues with the software. It worked really well and was pretty smooth. Even the notification center and quick toggles look like regular Android, which is always a good thing. It's about looks and functionality. You also get this multimedia widget in the notification center with the wrong animation.
Funtouch UI offers helpful gestures
You can place all your installed apps on the home screen, or use the more traditional Android app drawer interface. The settings screen is similar to the Samsung screen. The overall look is very nice and, as I said, this interface works very well. You can also get more features here. For example, you can use gestures, swipe up or down with three fingers to activate certain actions, such as taking a screenshot, activating split screen, etc. I use it often, as I did with previous Vivo phones.
This interface allows you to close apps while multitasking if a certain app dies and you don't want that to happen. RAM management is generally very good, and if you have problems with a particular app running in the background, you can always close it. For example, I had to do this with my smartwatch app. I did it from the very beginning and then there were no problems.
There were small problems, but the program is really good
In some cases, the notification didn't arrive the second time it should have, but that only happened twice. Everything else was mostly instant, so I think this will be fixed soon. I also have this UI version on my Vivo X60 Pro+ and it works great. I really have no complaints about the user interface and I'm sure most of you will love the software that comes with the Vivo X90 Pro.
Vivo X90 Pro review: is it worth buying?
Vivo X90 Pro is one of the best camera smartphones on the market today. Vivo has managed to combine the best camera sensor (for smartphones) with superior software and ZEISS optics to deliver a truly exceptional experience. Vivo X80 Pro has encountered consistency issues, but Vivo X90 Pro has no such issues. I wish Vivo would release the Vivo X90 Pro+ as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 would provide more battery life and a periscope camera would be useful. However, even without these additional features, the Vivo X90 Pro is a great thing. Its price will play a big role for most of you and unfortunately we don't know its price outside of China at the moment. However, one thing is for sure, this phone is great in many ways and doesn't have many flaws. So, if camera performance is important to you, you should definitely consider this phone.
