TechNode picked up Vivo's X90 Pro, the high-end product in the Chinese phone maker's new flagship series, which launched globally on February 3, and has spent the last two weeks testing it. Here are our thoughts on the phone.
The X90 Pro excels in visual capture. Given Vivo's collaboration with optical maestro Zeiss and the phone's 1-inch camera sensor, that's no surprise. The X90 Pro introduces consumers to Vivo's exclusive Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) technology, which enables smarter and more precise stabilization correction. It also offers improved light sensitivity, aperture size, and natural color processing. The phone uses the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 as its main processing chip, which we believe is powerful enough for everyday use and good enough to satisfy high-end gaming.
The series, starting with the X90 Pro, was first launched in China last November. You can now buy the X90 in China and Southeast Asia, while the X90 Pro has arrived in stores in Southeast Asia and Europe. Prices for the new series range from $600 to $950, depending on the model, store and where you shop in Asia.
If you're considering buying a new phone, it's also worth comparing Vivo's X90 series to other offerings in the same price range. For example, Xiaomi's Series 13 will launch globally on February 26 and is expected to cost between $650 and $1,000.
Professional visualization with Zeiss
For the series, Vivo worked with German optical company Zeiss to develop a larger 1-inch IMX989 sensor. In the X90 Pro, the effort translates into an impressive imaging system that excels in a variety of conditions and boasts a wide aperture that opens up to f/1.75.
In addition to Zeiss components, the X90 Pro is equipped with Vivo's exclusive custom V2 chip, which offers four important functional image enhancements. For example, the chip adopts a newly developed AI noise reduction algorithm, which boosts the main chip for better resolution of photos and videos taken at night. Some of our sample photos were taken on a rainy and foggy night in Shanghai, but the phone still managed to capture clear and vivid images.
The X90 Pro held up well to night photography in our tests. With clear output and enhanced depth, the camera displays the same level of vivid, professional images as photos captured with a large DSLR camera. In a richly lit environment, we can see in detail the effect of light and shadow inside the building.
It should be noted that when we photographed a lamp post at night, the halo effect was reduced and the glare was almost non-existent. The phone produces noise even in low light.
The X90 Pro also uses the ZEISS Natural Color 2.0 color profile, which gives photos a realistic look. The two daylight photos above were taken in a natural-toned environment. Many Android phones make photos too bright, but the X90 Pro avoids this problem.
An easy-on-the-eyes display and vegan leather back
The X90 Pro features a 6.78-inch 3D curved screen with Eye Saver Mode. Through software and hardware enhancements, the display reduces flicker and automatically adjusts brightness based on ambient light and time of day, reducing eye strain in dark environments. In addition, the new luminescent material reduces the amount of harmful blue light.
However, the X90 Pro only has a curved screen option, which might not be the first choice for users who prefer a flat screen.
The X90 Pro is made from vegan leather, which feels great in the hand and is stain resistant. However, it may not be popular with younger consumers. Plus, it's a bit heavy to hold and a bit fiddly to carry around in your pocket.
High gaming performance, cluttered UI
Vivo has used a dual-chip configuration for the new X90 series, which includes the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 and the vivo V2 chipset. Along with the Dimension 9200, the X90 Pro and X90 have very high AnTuTu (a website for checking mobile phone specifications) benchmark scores of 1.26 million and 1.22 million, which is a big leap forward in terms of performance.
We played Genshin Impact, a mobile game known for its high demands on phone systems, for 30 minutes, set to the highest quality of 60 frames per second. The screen was fluid when playing back images and fighting monsters. While gaming, the phone's temperature hovered around 42 degrees Celsius (107.6 Fahrenheit).
The phone interface can be improved as the default settings are a bit cluttered with all the recommended apps, games and ads.
The X90 Pro has 120W fast wired charging and a 4870mAh battery that charges to 100% in just 29 minutes. Currently, the series does not support wireless charging.
Diploma
After about two weeks of use, the biggest advantage we found with the Vivo X90 Pro is its camera. It is a good choice for photographers and can help amateurs take better photos. The design of the vegan leather case makes the phone unique. Its dual-chip configuration ensures smooth daily use and entertainment. In terms of long-term performance, the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 against Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is worth a look. TechNode summarizes the main pros and cons we found with the Vivo X90 Pro below:
strength
- Powerful camera system with Zeiss
- Dual-chip MediaTek Dimension 9200 technology and Vivo V2 chip
- Innovative design with vegan leather
- High performance gaming with eye protection screen
