Big Page at CRSSD Festival
25-year-old Irish dance-pop artist Jessica Smith – stage name Big Pig – is on the bill for this weekend's CRSSD festival, a two-day marathon that seems to eschew EDM in favor of deep house, techno and neo-disco. , tropical house, etc. Electronic music styles are suitable for dancers.
Launched in 2015 at San Diego's Waterfront Park, the biennial festival regularly features singer-songwriters, including the then-unknown Billie Eilish in 2017.
But still, CRSSD's musical bread and butter is computer equipment, male and female DJs, and not the faint voices of singer-songwriters.
Smith, who usually performs with a guitarist and keyboardist, uses pre-recorded beats and electronic tracks. But his music, with lyrics in both English and Spanish, draws more from hip-hop, lo-fi, indie rock and late '90s R&B than any other genre of electronic music.
After releasing several under-the-radar EPs, Smith is now signed to Columbia Records, which in January released "Bubblegum," a seven-song collection described as his "debut mixtape."
On Saturday at 2pm, CRSSD arrives at least seven hours before headline sets by French DJ/producer Kavinski, Slovenian DJ/producer Umek and French duo Polo & Pan.
CRSSD Festival, Saturday afternoon, 11 am and Sunday afternoon, 10 pm at San Diego Waterfront Park, 1600 Pacific Highway, downtown. They are sold out, but two-day general admission tickets for $299 are available for the 21+ event through the Festival Ticket Exchange at crssdpresent.lyte.com/3706526 .
A tour through the songs and audio history of Marcia Ball and Tinsley Ellis
Born in Texas and raised in Louisiana, award-winning pianist/singer Marcia Ball grew up musically in New Orleans and Austin.
His songs are a festive musical jambalaya of boogie-woogie, blues, swamp rock and New Orleans R&B. With his impressive keyboard work and soulful vocal delivery, Ball is a sure bet on any music scene.
Atlanta-born, Florida-raised guitarist/singer Tinsley Ellis, who, like Paul, has been a San Diego favorite for decades.
For their performance at the Building Museum this weekend, they will each play a solo acoustic set and then collaborate on a joint performance. It's a rare opportunity to hear them in an intimate setting without their band.
