Review: Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27 Is The Ideal Office And Family Desktop

The Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO line has long been a contender in the all-in-one (AIO) space for its compact power. Now, the latest models are proving to be great desktops whether you work from home or want a reliable computer for your family. It doesn't take up much space, but offers performance and convenience for most users.

I spent just over two weeks testing and using the Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27, and during that time I found this desktop to be as rugged and reliable as ever. Don't expect a tight match.

Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27: Pricing and Availability

This particular setup is available at Best Buy for $1,240. Plus, you can often find other configurations of this desktop for less than the MSRP at places like Amazon, Best Buy, and Newegg. As you'd expect with an AIO, no installation is required as the monitor simply attaches to the stand out of the box.

The Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i offers 27 large 27-inch displays and is competitively priced at $1,240. It has an Intel Core i5, 8GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. Overall, it handles video calls, music playback, and multitasking very well.

However, while it can comfortably run the less graphically demanding games Among Us, it can't run graphics-intensive video games like modern Hogwarts Legacy. Of course this is not surprising, because this AIO is not designed for playing intensive games. If you need more processing power, there are more powerful configurations on the market.

Other configurations of Lenovo's IdeaCentre AIO include some 27-inch display models and a version with a smaller 24-inch display. Some of these devices have the same Intel Core i5, while others use the Intel Core i7 and offer more RAM. However, each iteration uses the integrated Intel Iris Xe GPU. As expected, prices vary depending on the internal hardware used.

Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27: Build design and quality

In my opinion, Lenovo has made some odd design choices with the IdeaCentre over the past few years, with the previous model featuring an asymmetrical stand. This is probably for aesthetic reasons and may prevent the main body of the monitor from blocking any ports. However, at times it made the Lenovo AIOs of the past feel a little underpowered. Fortunately, the IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27 has a body that is sturdier and looks slimmer.

While not the thinnest screen I've seen, the IdeaCentre AIO 5i's case still looks sleek and stylish. The 27-inch monitor is supported by two metal posts that attach to the computer base. The screen can be tilted up or down, but the stand cannot be extended or lowered. However, the screen stays at a good height and moving it up or down solves viewing problems for taller or shorter people.

I took a moment to shake my desk violently to see if my center of thought had shifted. It sits on the table and makes me feel better letting my cat explore next to it. It takes some movement and/or strength to hit it.

Some of the ports are located on the back of the monitor and are spaced so that metal brackets don't interfere with the connection cables. SuperSpeed Front Left USB USB 3.0 USB Port Left side of the screen is an easily accessible SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port on the left side of the screen, useful for placing a microphone, wireless keyboard and mouse, charging cellphones or other accessories.

Like previous versions of this AIO, the base doubles as a wireless charging station and phone holder. You need to keep the phone where it is to charge (on the battery icon), but it's more comfortable to sit on your desk for a bit. Lenovo thought enough to include a USB-C to USB-C charging cable for phones that don't have wireless charging capabilities. Either way, you'll take care of your phone. My only complaint about the base is that I have to remove the case from the phone to fit into the narrow slot to actually use the phone holder. This is frustrating and takes away from the benefits that the platform is trying to provide.

Overall, this is a very nice desk that will look great in any home or office. The solid base gives me more confidence that my cat won't drop it, while the multiple ports provide all the necessary connection points.

Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27: Display

As you might expect, the 27-inch screen is so large that it's easy to view two different windows simultaneously. The Intel Iris Xe graphics processor used in the Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27 supports three displays simultaneously. However, there's only one HDMI output port, so you'll need to purchase a USB-C to HDMI adapter to connect a third monitor. Alternatively, the HDMI input port lets you act as an additional monitor when needed. This makes the IdeaCentre AIO 5i the perfect laptop companion.

Since the screen is also a touchscreen, it's easy to navigate between different applications or zoom in and out on an open page with a fingertip. This can make working on the Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i very comfortable. However, my cat switches windows by touching the screen, so I was pleased to see that touch capabilities can be easily turned off when not needed as an anti-cat measure for computers.

The screen brightness is adjusted from the Settings → Display menu, but there is no physical button on the screen to make this change. It can be dimmed and brightened and the resulting image is crisp and clear with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. There's a nightlight mode to block out blue light, which makes the screen easier on the eyes late at night.

To test monitor performance, I turned off HDR video mode and used a colorimeter to see monitor performance at standard settings. The IdeaCentre AIO 5i works well with its 27-inch IPS display, which displays a wide range of colors, brightness levels and contrast. So much so that there is no need to calibrate this monitor. As always, natural light in a room can change the experience dramatically, so things may vary slightly from one owner to another.

Bleeding can affect many screens, especially when brightness is at its lowest. However, on the IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27, even when the screen is completely dark, the display is uniform and there are no distractions. It provides a good user experience that doesn't interfere with basic night use or watching videos.

Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27: Performance

The Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27 isn't designed for PC gaming, so it lacks the processing power of the latest and greatest graphics hardware. However, it works great when using most applications and is a great multitasker. I tested performance while running other programs, playing Among Us, listening to music, watching videos, and/or participating in video meetings using Adobe Photoshop. It can effortlessly do all of this without stuttering, blowing propellers or slowing down.

12th generation Intel Core i5-12500H processor that uses slightly above average AIO. We tested the IdeaCentre AIO 5i in 27 different benchmark tests, including Geekbench 5, CrossMark, Cinebench, PCMark, and CrystalDiskMark. Below you can see the following results:

I tested the Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27 (2022) with the new Geekbench 6, which scored 2,039 points in the single-core and 7,967 points in the multi-core benchmark. While not the most powerful computer on the market today, the i5 CPU is ready to take on most applications and tasks. Suitable for video chatting, listening to music, watching videos and playing simple games with low graphics. However, it struggles with intensive games, complex video editing software, or other applications that require a lot of processing power.

Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27: Keyboard and Mouse

There's nothing special about a wireless mouse or wireless keyboard, but they are better in some ways. Both are quite simple but very reliable. Batteries are included for this device, the keyboard uses two AA batteries and the mouse uses one battery.

The keyboard is very satisfying to use. It has number pad and various function shortcuts to unlock computer, slicer, settings, calculator, and default web browser. As usual, there's also an audio function shortcut to mute, tune, pause/play, or unmute the microphone. It provides a lot of benefits without doing much.

Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27: camera and sound

Like previous IdeaCentre models, the 5-megapixel infrared camera on this Lenovo AIO extends through the screen and can be rinsed with the screen cover to hide it. This means you can be more secure in knowing your camera isn't taking pictures when you don't want them to.

For testing, I took the time to see how well it handled audio and video during business meetings. Camera footage isn't groundbreaking, but it's crystal clear; Auto-adjustable brightness and color help you see the best of the show. It works better than I expected in low light.

Meanwhile, the dual JBL 5W speakers are located under the screen and facing downwards, depending on the surface where the sound is reflected, the sound can be amplified properly. During video calls, the Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27 conveys my voice clearly and allows me to present myself clearly. However, like most AIOs, if you want to hear louder sound, deeper bass, and highs in your music or videos, you'll need to purchase an external computer speaker to enhance your audio experience.

Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27: Software

As you would expect from the current generation of desktop computers, the Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27 runs Windows 11. Discussing how this operating system works is of course another matter. Let me say that Windows 11 doesn't have any outstanding components, but there are some significant changes from Windows 10. For example, if you're not used to the new design, it might take some getting used to. The Start button is located in the bottom center, bottom left corner of the screen, but it's very easy to use when you make these changes in Windows 11.

The device is also pre-installed with Lenovo Vantage software which helps you update drivers, run diagnostics, and get support. So it's easy to check how IdeaCentre AIO 5i works and get official support if needed. It is a useful application which helps users keep track of everything.

Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i 27: The Competition

The number of the best all-in-one (AIO) computers on the market today is growing. Even though it's a bit dated now, the HP ENVY 34 is still an impressive Windows 11 desktop in a configuration that boasts 11th-generation Intel Core i7-11700 and Core i9-11900 processors. As the name suggests, this AIO has a tall 34-inch screen for all your viewing needs. It can have up to 32GB RAM, 16MP camera, Qi wireless charging, and NVIDIA RTX 3080 graphics card which is perfect for gaming.

But as you'd expect for a PC with bigger hardware, the HP ENVY 34 costs more with an MSRP of $2,350. The trade-off is that it can handle more intensive software, making it perfect for gamers, video editors, or anyone else who uses hardcore software.
