Airbnb Takes 'antiparty Stance' Using Stricter Technology To Prevent Rowdy New Years Eve House Parties

If you were hoping to host your holiday party on Airbnb, you might want to reconsider.

Full-night bookings will be suspended for some Airbnb users on New Year's Eve, and those users will face tighter restrictions on booking longer stays during that time, the company said in a blog post Thursday.

Prospective guests must have a positive experience on the platform to secure an overnight stay or longer stay during the holiday season, he added.

The company said it plans to reduce "obnoxious cruise parties" around the world and strengthen its "anti-party stance" as part of its crackdown on unauthorized parties.

In addition to a robust booking process, Airbnb announced in October that it's offering a free noise sensor for hosts who want to keep their guests from making too much noise.

In June, Airbnb announced a permanent ban on parties after temporarily banning them in 2020, after posting a 44% year-over-year decline.

Airbnb's director of trusted products and operations, Naba Banerjee, wrote that most travelers and hosts are "neighbor-friendly ... and deliver value to their local community."

"These proactive safety measures will help promote responsible travel and prevent inappropriate behavior, allowing hosts, guests and communities to enjoy the holiday season with confidence."

The new bans came into effect in 11 countries, including the US, Brazil, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain, England, Ireland, Portugal and the Netherlands.

Airbnb announced that it will roll out this feature globally in the spring of 2023.
