Vivo's latest line of phones follows the company's biggest Android competitor. Chinese phone maker Samsung announced the X90 and X90 Pro a few days after it launched the Galaxy S23 . The X90 Pro uses a 120W charger and a 1-inch Sony IMX 989 sensor in the main camera.
I had the chance to test the Vivo X90 Pro shortly before its launch as I focused on the camera test. In my limited time with the phone, I've found that it produces a wide variety of shots with day and night clarity and great depth of field. Sometimes, however, images aren't as bright as I'd like—even in daylight, the phone's 1-inch Sony IMX 989 sensor surprised me with crisp images.
Apart from the camera, the Vivo X90 Pro has all the hallmarks of a high-end flagship of 2023. It has a 6.78-inch AMOLED display, a triple camera setup with two 50MP cameras, a massive battery, and 120W fast charging. . The Xiaomi 12T Pro has 120W fast charging, and despite it having a 200MP camera, it's my favorite feature of this phone.
Note that Vivo X90 Pro is powered by Mediatek Dimensity 9200 chipset. This differs from the latest Samsung Galaxy S23 which is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Ge 2 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage.
Pricing information was not available at the time of this article. But expect a global launch of the X90 series in parts of Europe and Asia. There are currently no plans for a US release.
Strange back design for X90 Pro
The design of the X90 Pro up front looks relatively familiar to a 2023 phone. The rectangular screen features curved edges and a notch in the middle that houses the selfie camera. But turn it over, and you'll see a narrow strip that runs the entire width of the case (below the camera module).
No, it's not a camera bezel like the Google Pixel 7 line, it's a flat bezel with "Xtreme Imagination" written on the back of the phone. Honestly, this premium phone makes weird decisions that spoil the entire design. Above this composite bar is a circular camera bulge with three lenses. Also at the bottom is a bold Vivo logo, which I'm not too happy about, but I can understand why it's there.
Zeiss X90 Pro lens
Vivo claims that this phone gives you professional photography tools in your pocket. That's why the company has expanded its partnership with Zeiss, a 176-year-old company said to be a leader in optical photography. The X90 Pro has three cameras: a 50MP main camera, a 50MP portrait camera, and a 12MP wide-angle lens.
The photos I take with my phone are very good and I love how the photos come out with amazing bokeh. However, as I mentioned before, some of the images were darker than I would have expected given the size of the sensor. You can see the camera in action below.
Vivo X90 Pro battery
The X90 Pro houses a 4,780mAh battery that can be charged using a 120W charger or a 50W wireless charger (sold separately). The phone offers two charging modes: fast charging and balanced mode. Vivo claims that using the above mode, the X90 Pro can be charged up to 50% in 8 minutes and 10 seconds. Balanced Mode seems ideal for everyday charging, and Vivo claims it takes 29 minutes to fully charge the battery. I haven't had a chance to test this feature yet, but plan to update when I have more info, so please check back on this page.
The new features of Vivo X90 Pro
Vivo changed the feature set of its previous phone, the V80 Pro. In addition to switching chipsets from Qualcomm to Mediatek, it also ditched the ultrasonic fingerprint reader, telephoto lens, and lowered the screen resolution. The 3D Sonic Max feature is what sets the X80 Pro apart from many other Android flagships, so that's a shame.
